| Summary | He entered the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1775 and was awarded the Prix de Rome prize in 1790. Jacques Réattu is a great painter of a key period in history (the French Revolution) and the history of art (Neoclassicism). Among his best-known works are the decoration of the Temple of Reason in Marseilles - a series of eight monumental paintings painted in grisaille in imitation of bas-reliefs and illustrating the revolutionary ideals - his theatrical and theatrical projects, city hotels in Marseille, Nimes and Lyon and a religious setting for the church of St Paul de Beaucaire. In this first retrospective devoted to him, more than 100 paintings and 200 drawings interact with the works of his contemporaries.--Musée Réattu |
